They are bulky because they handle high power. If local carriers don't receive,reduce and retransmit - it ain't possible. Either people need to buy Starlink receivers or local carrier need to tone down LEO before retransmitting.

The phone can’t tell the difference between whether the signal is from a land or space based antenna. Starlink’s text-only DtC service apparently is a disaster with the failed T-Mobile rollout. So, seriously, you’re entitled to be skeptical, but spare us the BS. Iran could use $ASTS right now. There is NO other alternative.

Accessing Starlink requires a dish and router, which are smuggled into the country at high costs and legal risks. Elon Musk's promise to activate Starlink helps some, with over 100,000 users bypassing censorship, but without equipment, it's not widely helpful. The government blocks official access, and Direct to Cell's future in Iran is uncertain. Thus, the promise is limited by practical barriers for most Iranians.

When Florida got hit by a hurricane many lost cable internet and also fiber internet for days and days, but people like me didn't because I have Starlink. - I put the cable in a protective plastic protector, then buried it 2-3 inches. - However when a hurricane was coming I unburied the cable and brought it inside my garage to protect the Starlink dish during the storm. - There is plenty of extra cable to do so. - As soon as the wind dued died down I brought it back out and had my high speed internet back up within about 10 minutes.

Even more serious abuses of tech are allowed without easy counter. Pirates use starlink on fast boats in conflict areas. They could easy geo locate water and acceleration and kick a user for 5min. What use is crypto then? Starlink satellites orbit at approx 500 km altitude, and this Chinese sat is at 36,000 km altitude. A significant difference in signal travel distance!

Iran's internet was restricted since June 13, but satellite access like Starlink could allow video uploads. Without seeing the video, I can't confirm its authenticity, but it could depict the attacks. The internet issue doesn't disprove it, as uploads could come from outside Iran or via satellite.

Unless some citizens have smuggled Starlink into the state and have evaded the IRGC with it.
