    Also @zoom_us seems to have the same issue in its algorithm for detecting faces against virtual backgrounds. Check your algorithms against all skin tones and if there's bias, fix it.

    @piq9117 @zoom_us @colinmadland It’s not just a software problem, it’s a hardware problem too. Camera lens sensors are also not optimized for diversity, yet :/

    @klogram @zoom_us @colinmadland That could be the case, but if they have an entire team for virtual background engineering. It would be hard to think that they would compromise on a smaller database Although this is just one case, maybe if there are more such cases then it would be considered an inherent issue

    @zoom_us For meetings I'm not hosting, but that I join every week via the drop down menu of remembered recent meetings, is there any way to get the app to remember those meetings' pass codes so that I don't have to track them down every week?

    @aharshit123456 @zoom_us @colinmadland It’s not true that any black person can be used to replicate the problem. I use the feature daily without issue, so skin complexion may make a difference.

    @Jim_Barrows @colinmadland No Jim, what you’re missing is that this proves - without any doubt - that @zoom_us doesn’t have a diverse team of developers, testers, and customers beta testing to help catch things like this before it ships to the world. Diversity makes better products and services possible.

    @keyofnight @zoom_us @colinmadland Ah! That is absolutely fair. I misunderstood. But to generalise, we need LOTS of people with LOTS of white backgrounds, right? Not just this guy or we solve the shiny white tile dark skin problem but not the learned algorithm of look for a white space in a dark background.

    @toastfloats @zoom_us @colinmadland I was not using my experiences as data. I was saying that people of color are not fungible. Zoom likely won't be able to replicate the issue with just any old person of color. They need to reach out to *this specific person of color* so they can replicate the issue and fix it.

    Alright folks I need your help. I have an issue that my mic/input is crackling on VoIP applications like @Discord & @zoom_us. However when I RECORD it using the same input device it's all clean. I can't pinpoint the issue. Using @WeAreFocusrite Scarlett Solo->USB2.0 Any ideas?

    @colinmadland @zoom_us This explains why the same thing happens to me and all this while I was blaming the camera, lighting etc. Zoom should fix this.

    @toastfloats @zoom_us @colinmadland Real life black person and philosopher of tech, here. Virtual backgrounds work for me and the other PoC I know. We don't all look the same, and we don't all have the same problems. Algorithms are also difficult to debug. They can't just rely on a token to fix this problem. 😶

    @sixfootbrit @zoom_us There's a link to an article in the original thread about the issue. All people are asking for is a little thought on the part of the designers of the software. It's their job as product designers to make sure that the program works for as many people as possible.

    @zoom_us @colinmadland Don't take this the wrong way, but your team of engineers is probably the issue. The facial recognition failing is not a new problem, but the root cause is ALWAYS the same. Do better.

    @t_matam_t Yet another example of bad face recognition, as it seems. But we might want to wait for the reaction of the @zoom_us team. They have offered help and indicated that they could not replicate the phenomenon. Let's see whether it is a widespread problem that indicates biased data.

    @animesh_garg @zoom_us @Twitter Testing is definitely necessary. But sometimes you cannot test all the possibilities. You might as well collect the errors after you go live. And another thing I don't understand is how does this mistake affect psyche/behavior of people?

However, I’d stand by the idea that if you want to reproduce the problem with a depth perception algorithm and get rid of it, it makes sense to have the particular instance and not just a test scenario that presumably worked.
