But the core claims driving the marches (water grid drain + waste heat baking the city) still don’t match the actual engineering. These aren’t traditional evaporative data centres. Telus/Westbank designs use closed-loop liquid cooling—a sealed system that recirculates the same fluid, like a car radiator. Result: dramatically lower water use (company target: up to 90% less than conventional air-cooled facilities) and near-zero ongoing evaporation for the primary loop. At 150 W Georgia, the heat isn’t vented to the street. It’s transferred into Creative Energy’s district steam plant to help heat 200+ downtown buildings and cut natural-gas demand. That’s the opposite of “warming the city.” Protests highlight real questions about scale, power, and process. Those deserve scrutiny. Adjusted income still dropped 26 percent once you strip that out. I've built systems like this. The story sells long before anyone checks if the product holds up. Makes me wonder how many other Canadian telcos are carrying an AI unit priced on the same promise.
